CHARLESTON — Civic Memorial junior Tullio Zamperi secured a spot in the finals of the Class 2A IHSA State Track and Field Meet in the 800-meter run on Friday, May 30, 2025, finishing ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:57.56. Zamperi advanced to Saturday's finals just behind Roxana’s Anthony Hardin, who clocked a time of 1:57.55 to place eighth in the prelims. The event took place at the Eastern Illinois University Big Blue track in Charleston, a venue Zamperi described as having a unique and energizing atmosphere. “I am very, very excited. Additional Lane Closures at Illinois 140 and Fosterburg Road Intersection ย

ALTON – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that additional lane closures will take effect on westbound and eastbound Illinois 140 at the intersection of Fosterburg Road in Madison County beginning, weather permitting, Wednesday, June 4. The closures will be as follows: Westbound Illinois 140: The two inside lanes will be closed. Only one lane will remain open. Eastbound Illinois 140: The inside lane will be closed. The remaining three lanes will remain open. All traffic signals at the intersection will remain on red flash throughout the closure period. Motorists should treat flashing red signals as stop signs and proceed through the intersection only when it is safe, following standard four-way stop rules. The closures are part of an ongoing $1.95 million project that will add new turn lanes at the intersection. The overall project is expected to be completed by November. Troy to Host Major E-Cycle and Shredding Event

TROY - A huge e-cycling and shredding event is scheduled for next weekend. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2025, community members can bring electronics, paper and prescription medications to Triad High School in Troy. Hosted by the Troy/Maryville/St. Jacob/Marine Chamber of Commerce, the e-cycle and shredding event aims to provide a convenient way for community members to dispose of items. “Bring all your stuff,” said Dawn Mushill, president of the Chamber of Commerce. “We have a line designated. We have volunteers that will help you out. Alton Mayor Gives Update On Gordon Moore Sinkhole Repair

ALTON – Alton Mayor David Goins offered an update this week on the status of the sinkhole that formed at Gordon Moore Park last summer . At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Alderman Mike Velloff asked Goins for an update on the situation. Goins said New Frontier Materials recently completed an over-300 page report on what caused the sinkhole and how it will be repaired, but said the next steps will take more time to complete. “Obviously, it’s going to take some time. I would ask for the citizens to just have some patience with us, but there is a plan in place,” Goins said. “The plan is to begin to stabilize the underground first, then begin to fill the hole ... Attorney General Raoul Charges O'Fallon Man Over Alleged Possession Of Child Sexual Abuse Material

CHICAGO – Attorney General Kwame Raoul charged an O’Fallon, Illinois, man for allegedly possessing child sexual abuse material. The case is part of Raoul’s ongoing work, in collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies and local law enforcement officials throughout Illinois, to apprehend offenders who download and trade child sexual abuse material online. The Attorney General’s office charged Jeffery Odegaard, 55, in St. Clair County Circuit Court with 15 Class 2 felony counts of possession of child pornography, each punishable by up to seven years in prison. SPRINGFIELD – In direct response to the deadly tornado that struck an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville in December 2021, State Senator Christopher Belt passed a measure through the Illinois Senate creating the Warehouse Tornado Preparedness Act. “This tragedy exposed serious gaps in emergency preparedness at large warehouse facilities,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “This measure ensures no worker in Illinois will be left unprotected the next time severe weather strikes.” Under Belt’s measure, warehouse operators must develop and file tornado safety plans for each facility within 120 days of the law’s effective date. Plans must include detailed evacuation procedures, shelter locations, emergency equipment inventories and post-disaster response protocols. ALTON – Three Alton residents were charged on the same day with possessing a series of stolen vehicles in Madison County. Douglas F. Manns, 47, Edwanda L. Smith, 28, and Justin G. Rodewald, 37, all of Alton, were each charged on May 22, 2025 with Class 2 felony counts of offenses related to motor vehicles. Manns allegedly possessed a 2019 Barlow trailer which he knew to be stolen on April 10, 2025. Smith was charged with knowingly possessing a stolen 2012 Ford Explorer on March 20, 2025, while Rodewald is accused of knowingly possessing a stolen Chevrolet Equinox on March 6, 2025. The Metro East Auto Theft Task Force of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office presented each of the cases against Manns, Smith, and Rodewald. All were granted pretrial release from custody. All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law

100 Years Ago: Alton Captain Visits Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis

ALTON - After suffering a stroke in 1923, Captain Joseph True (J.T.) Dodge (1845 – 1930) had been an invalid for nearly two years when he woke up on May 30, 1925, and went on an excursion trip to Jefferson Barracks. Dodge wanted to see some of his friends in Ransom Post, No. 131, Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) of St. Louis. Dodge’s friend, “young” Joab Watkins (91 years old), escorted him to the wharf, where Dodge boarded the excursion steamer “J.S.” He got off the boat at Jefferson Barracks, witnessed the flag ceremonies there at noon when the flag was hauled to full mast, then walked around looking for fellow Ransom Post members. "Everyone's Grandma" Franny Fosha Leaves Behind Legacy of Love in Jerseyville

JERSEYVILLE - The City of Jerseyville has experienced a great loss following the death of Franny Fosha. Known as “everyone’s grandma,” Franny was a business owner in Jerseyville. But more than that, she was a friend to all. Her loved ones said she lived well and loved hard. “She was just a downright good person,” said Kathy Smith, her daughter. “The community is pretty much everything, and they’ve been awesome through this so far. The love she had was unreal.” In 1980, Franny opened the Donut Kitchen on Highway 16, then eventually expanded to Fran and Marilyn’s on State Street. Her pie-baking was “phenomenal,” with people traveling from across the Midwest to enjoy her pastries. After the restaurant was sold, Franny would often spend her days at DJ’s Pub & Grill, owned by Kathy, to make pies to share with the community.
