EDWARDSVILLE - The SIU System is pleased to announce that Moayad "Mo" Abuzaneh, a junior at SIU Edwardsville (SIUE), is the newest member of the SIU Board of Trustees. Abuzaneh was elected by the students of SIUE to serve on the board from January 27 – June 30, 2025. A special election was recently held after the previous SIUE student trustee resigned. “As a board trustee, my main goal is to advocate for SIUE students and ensure their voices are heard at the system level,” said Abuzaneh. “I want to push for initiatives that enhance student life, academic resources and financial accessibility while fostering greater engagement between students and administration.” Abuzaneh was born in Jordan and moved to the United States in 2021. CHICAGO - The State of Illinois announced today it has executed a contract for a new seed-to-sale system for Illinois’ growing medical and adult use cannabis programs. Metrc is a highly-configurable, secure, and scalable system that will modernize Illinois’ evolving cannabis industry and regulatory systems. This includes utilizing RFID tags, computerized tags that allow for easier, more accurate entry of information into the system by operators. Through State funding, cannabis business establishments will not be charged for Metrc’s RFID tags, subject to certain restrictions. These new identification tags will reduce manual auditing and increase time for health-related inspections. MURPHYSBORO – The Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigations Zone 7 was requested by the Murphysboro Police Department (MPD) to investigate an officer involved death. On February 4, 2025, at approximately 1:30 a.m., an officer from the MPD attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had previously fled from other police agencies. The vehicle failed to stop and the MPD officer lost sight of the vehicle. The vehicle that failed to stop was located crashed near south 14th Street and Spruce Street in Murphysboro. The driver was pronounced deceased on scene. The passenger was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. ISP is leading the open and ongoing investigation. No additional information will be released at this time.

ALTON - Alton City Clerk Cheryl Ingle is running for reelection, and she believes her 29 years of experience in City Hall will guide her through the next four years in the City Clerk’s position. Ingle shared that she has worked hard to digitize documents and processes in the City Clerk’s office. SPRINGFIELD/CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced that after a one-week dip, the state’s overall respiratory illness level has ticked up again from Moderate to High, driven by a notable increase in emergency department (ED) visits and hospital admissions for flu. While data for ED visits and hospital admissions for the week ending January 25 show that COVID-19 and RSV are declining, it indicates the flu is circulating more widely. There are three times as many hospital admissions for flu as there are for COVID-19, with 4.6% of admissions attributed to flu, with 1.6% to COVID-19 and 0.7% for RSV. Almost 20% percent of ED visits were for acute respiratory illness, a catchall category that includes flu, COVID-19 and RSV plus other respiratory conditions. ST. CLAIR COUNTY - A 50-year-old motorcyclist from Troy died in a collision with a car Sunday night in St. Clair County. Darroll Clifford Lambert was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 6 p.m. on February 2, 2025, on Scott Troy Road near the intersection of Old Lebanon Troy Road in St. Clair County. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash and discovered Lambert’s black 1999 Honda motorcycle alongside a maroon 2015 Ford Mustang driven by a female, whose name has not been released. CPR was administered to Lambert until first responders arrived, but he was pronounced deceased at 7:24 p.m. Sunday. The sheriff's department is currently investigating the two-vehicle crash, with assistance from the Illinois State Police traffic crash reconstruction unit. Further details regarding the incident have not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.

SPRINGFIELD – 1099-G tax forms are now available for claimants who received unemployment insurance (UI) benefits in 2024, the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today. Claimants who collected UI benefits last year will need the 1099-G tax form to complete their state and federal tax returns. Also called ‘Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments,’ this form is necessary for individuals who received state or federal UI benefits. The vision for the STEAM lab was developed by St. Ambrose graduate and current Edwardsville HS Junior, Elisabeth Preston. BELLEVILLE - A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Monday evening, Feb. 3, 2025, in Belleville, marking a tragic incident that has left the community in shock. The St. Clair County Coroner's Office said Dirico V. Washington was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m. on Monday at Memorial Hospital in Belleville after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred at Washington's last known address, 135 N. 81st St., in the 100 block of North 81st Street, Belleville. Belleville Police were dispatched to the area at 5:31 p.m. Monday in response to reports of multiple shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found Washington on the ground in front of a residence, where first aid was administered by both Belleville Police and Fire personnel before he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
