CARBONDALE – Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 10 Commander, Captain Joshua Anderton, announces the ISP will conduct Nighttime Enforcement (NITE) patrols in Williamson County during December. NITE patrols allow the ISP to focus on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement action in response to impaired driving and occupant restraint violations especially between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The number of unrestrained drivers killed in traffic crashes is significantly higher at nighttime and combined with impaired driving means even more traffic deaths during these critical hours. Officers working the enforcement patrols will be watchful for motorists who show signs of impaired driving, improper seatbelt and child restraint usage, speeding, distracted driving, and other Illinois Vehicle Code violations. ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis Zoo has launched a new conservation initiative that will support research, field work and outreach to help both wild polar bears in the Arctic and the people that live among them. The Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute Center for Polar Bear Conservation is the first new conservation center created by the Zoo since 2019. It will be an adaptable conservation program dedicated to safeguarding the species. The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and faces significant threats including loss of sea ice habitats due to climate change. “It's incredibly important that we better understand and protect this species now more than ever,” said Center Director Julie Hartell-DeNardo, who also serves as the Kevin Beckmann Curator of Carnivores at Saint Louis Zoo. “We hope deepening the Zoo’s longstanding support of this species can make a real impact for these magnificent bears.”

ALTON — Emerson A. "Bud" Schultz Jr., a prominent figure in the Riverbend music community, died Thursday, November 14, 2024. He was 90 years old. Schultz was known for his extensive contributions to music education and performance in the Alton region, particularly as a one-time director of the Alton High School Marching 100 and a long-time member of the “You Can’t Beat Experience” Jazz Band. Tim Jarden, a former student and music teacher in the Alton School District, reflected on Schultz's influence, stating, “He was a great teacher, a super musician who helped so many people.” Jarden highlighted Schultz's ability to blend difficult music with more accessible tunes, noting his dedication to inspiring students. “He tried to pull the best out of people,” Jarden said. MADISON COUNTY — Authorities are seeking the public's help in identifying the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a cyclist last month. The incident involved 43-year-old Pablo Puente of Edwardsville, who was reported missing on Oct. 3, 2024. According to a release from CrimeStoppers, family members last saw Puente on Oct. 2, 2024, when he left home riding his 29-inch Giordano Intrepid Carbon Aluminum Frame Mountain Bike. His body was discovered at 2:40 p.m. on Oct. 4, 2024, along Illinois Route 143 near Kendall Drive. Investigators determined that Puente had been struck by a vehicle that subsequently fled the scene. The incident occurred near the intersection of Regina Avenue and Horn Avenue in South County. The suspects are currently being held at the St. Louis County Family Court on charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. ALTON - The 10th annual Robert Sean Hilligoss Memorial Toys for Tots Benefit is scheduled for this weekend. On Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, community members are invited to the Alton VFW for live music, raffles, a silent auction and more. Proceeds benefit the local Toys for Tots drive, from which 14,000 children in Madison County are expected to receive toys. “This is a personal endeavor for me. GRANITE CITY - A high-speed police chase resulting in a crash and more has led to multiple felony charges filed against a Belleville resident. Lecourtney A. Luckett, 44, of Belleville, was charged with aggravated battery (a Class 2 felony), aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer (a Class 3 felony), driving while license is revoked, and resisting a peace officer (both Class A misdemeanors).
