EAST ST. LOUIS – A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident that occurred last month in East St. Louis. Eddie T. Johnson of Cahokia Heights faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a firearm. The shooting took place around 2 a.m. on Sept 22, 2024, when the East St. Louis Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 1500 block of Gaty Avenue. A male victim was driving in the area when he was struck by bullets fired from outside his vehicle. He was subsequently transported to a regional hospital with serious injuries. Following the incident, the East St. Louis Police Department sought assistance from the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation’s Public Safety Enforcement Group. Through a detailed investigation, Johnson was identified as the alleged shooter. An arrest warrant for Johnson was issued by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office on Oct. 22, 2024.

SPRINGFIELD - Halloween is a fun, spooky and exciting time for kids and adults as they scour for that perfect costume and people add spooky decorations to their homes. Sami McKenny was nominated by Edwardsville High School journalism teacher, Mrs. Amanda Thrum. Sami is the daughter of Dr. Elizabeth and Dr. Mark McKenny. She is 17 years old and a senior at EHS. GODFREY - The Godfrey Fire District and Madison County Sheriff's Office responded to a three-car accident at the intersection of West Delmar Avenue and Valley Drive. Engines 1412 and 1422 worked the scene. The crash did require some traffic disruption and the public was asked to avoid the scene for 30 minutes. The Godfrey Fire District expressed gratitude to Alton Memorial Ambulance, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, and Bowers Towing for their assistance in managing the incident. There were individuals treated at the scene for injuries, but none of the injuries appeared to be serious in nature, according to early reports. No further details regarding injuries or the cause of the accident have been released at this time.

Green Bay Packer fans held their collective breath during the opening week of the NFL season when their star quarterback, Jordan Love, went down with what initially looked like a serious knee injury. Fortunately for the Packers, Love’s injury was not season ending. It was a medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain. The MCL is one of the four ligaments that stabilize the knee, along with the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and lateral collateral ligament (LCL). The MCL is located on the inner side of the knee, and it prevents the knee from collapsing inward. BELLEVILLE — Three individuals died in a house fire early Monday morning, October 28, 2024, in Belleville, according to the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office. The victims have been identified as George Pappas, 79, Christopher Ellis, 20, and Pioquinto Pappas, 39. The fire erupted at approximately 5:20 a.m. at a residence at the intersection of West Lincoln and South 13th Street. First responders were on the scene by 5:24 a.m. and relayed a report of heavy smoke on the residence's first floor. Belleville firefighters responded to the scene, managing to rescue one person from the flames. Three other family members escaped the burning home on their own. A cadaver dog was deployed to assist in locating the victims who were trapped inside the house. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

GRANITE CITY - Two St. Louis residents face felony charges after stealing thousands in sports store merchandise, hijacking a police car, and more. Theodore Barnett, 44, and Crisshay A. Shell, 27, both of St. Louis, were both charged with the following: Armed violence (Class X felony) Vehicular hijacking (Class 1 felony) Retail theft over $300 (Class 3 felony) Resisting a peace officer (Class A misdemeanor) Barnett was additionally charged with aggravated battery, a Class 2 felony, and unlawful possession of weapons by a felon, a Class 3 felony. Both individuals were involved in a theft from Hibbett Sports in Granite City. The situation escalated after the would-be getaway car got stuck, leading to a police vehicle hijacking and battery of an officer. Petitions were filed to deny pretrial release for both Barnett and Shell, which describe the incident as follows: “Officers responded to a report of a male and female suspect stealing from Hibbett Sports,”

BeDell Achievement and Resource Center (arc) will host its 43rd annual dance and auction on Saturday, November 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. The event will take place at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 1713 Stamper Lane in Godfrey. Tickets to the dance are $25 per person. A taco bar, beer and soda will be provided. Those who attend are free to bring appetizers, side dishes or dessert. SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced the Illinois Flag Commission received 4,844 entries during the six-week submission period that closed Oct. 18. “I’m thrilled by the number of submissions the commission has received, as well as the excitement that this project has generated. I can’t wait to see which designs the commission selects for public voting,” Giannoulias said. “The contest has encouraged us all to reflect on what makes us proud to be Illinoisans, resulting in some great stories and unique designs reflecting what our state represents.” Now that the submission period is closed, the Illinois Flag Commission will meet before the end of the year to select the top 10 designs. Beginning in January, the public will have the opportunity to vote online for one of 10 new designs, or one of the three former flag designs, including the current state flag, the 1918 Centennial Flag and the 1968 Sesquicentennial Flag.

Fresh Express is voluntarily recalling a limited number of Gourmet Café Chicken Caesar Salad Bowls due to the inclusion of recalled chicken items from BrucePac, an outside ingredient supplier. The BrucePac recall is due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The fresh vegetable components are not impacted by this recall. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
