ALTON — Recently, Alton High School senior Adelia Sandifer took the initiative to organize a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Showcase aimed at informing incoming freshmen about the various elective classes offered within the CTE department. The event provided a platform for upperclassmen currently enrolled in CTE courses to share their experiences and insights. The AHS higher-level students engaged with the freshmen, answering questions and helping them navigate their options for future studies. Sandifer's efforts were focused on ensuring that the younger students understood the opportunities available to them in the CTE curriculum. GODFREY - On Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, St. Ambrose Catholic School held the “Grand Opening” for a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) lab. The vision for the STEAM lab was developed by St. Ambrose graduate and current Edwardsville HS Junior, Elisabeth Preston. Elisabeth chose to complete this project as the focus for her Girl Scout Gold Award (the highest level award presented to scouts). Elisabeth has been involved in scouting for more than 10 years. Elisabeth wanted to create a space for all St. Ambrose students to use and the inspiration came from her love for math, science, and engineering as well as from her admiration and respect for her teachers at St. Ambrose and EHS. Lisa Brennan, executive director of Faith in Action Collinsville, explained that the national organization aims to support senior citizens by organizing volunteers. The Collinsville chapter is now active in Troy and Granite City, and they’re looking for more community partners to help them help others. “Our whole mission is to support people ages 60 and older in our communities,” Brennan said. “The more people in the community who understand what we do, the greater our success. BELLEVILLE - A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Monday evening, Feb. 3, 2025, in Belleville, marking a tragic incident that has left the community in shock. The St. Clair County Coroner's Office said Dirico V. Washington was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m. on Monday at Memorial Hospital in Belleville after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred at Washington's last known address, 135 N. 81st St., in the 100 block of North 81st Street, Belleville. Belleville Police were dispatched to the area at 5:31 p.m. Monday in response to reports of multiple shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found Washington on the ground in front of a residence, where first aid was administered by both Belleville Police and Fire personnel before he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. EDWARDSVILLE - In Spring 2023, food insecurity, housing insecurity and/or homelessness were reported among 52% of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville students who responded to a national Basic Student Needs Survey, conducted by the Hope Center at Temple University and administered by SIUE’s Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. BELLEVILLE — The Belleville Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, in the 100 block of North 81st Street. At approximately 5:31 p.m., police received reports of multiple shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 16-year-old male on the ground in front of a residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First aid was administered at the scene by Belleville Police and Fire personnel before the victim was transported to Memorial Hospital in Belleville by Abbott EMS. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Belleville Police Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit were dispatched to the scene to begin their investigation. As of now, the investigation is in its early stages, and authorities have indicated that further information will be released as it becomes available.

DUPO – The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has been activated following a shooting that left one person dead and another injured on Monday morning, Feb. 3, 2025. According to a statement from the Major Case Squad, officers arrived at the scene to find two individuals with apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to hospitals in the Saint Louis area for treatment. However, one of the individuals later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The Major Case Squad was requested to assist with the investigation by Dupo Police Chief Dennis Plew. Sergeant Justin Biggs of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has been assigned as the deputy commander for the case. In light of the ongoing investigation, local schools are on lockdown as a precautionary measure. The Major Case Squad is urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.
