BELLEVILLE - The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency expressed its condolences to the Alton Police Department after the loss of dedicated police dog K-9 Odin on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency's statement was as follows: "Our sympathies to Alton Police on the loss of their brave and dedicated K-9 Odin who paid the ultimate sacrifice yesterday in the line of duty. K-9 Odin died protecting his handler (who was also shot) and fellow officers. We wish the injured officer a speedy recovery as well." The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office had these comments about Odin and the other officer: "With a heavy heart, we are sending our condolences to the Alton Police Department on the passing of K-9 Odin. WOOD RIVER — Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a house fire on the 1400 block of Williams Street Friday afternoon, Aug. 23, 2024, where smoke was seen coming from the roof vents. Upon arrival, the Wood River Fire Department encountered heavy smoke coming from the house. Firefighters swiftly brought the fire under control, preventing further damage. A box-alarm was issued, prompting additional support from the Roxana, East Alton, Rosewood Heights, and Edwardsville Fire Departments. Madison County Emergency Management deployed their rehab truck, while Alton Memorial Ambulance provided standby support. It appears that nobody was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The Illinois State Fire Marshal has been called in to assist with the investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

GRAFTON - At their regular meeting on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Grafton City Council unanimously approved Mayor Mike Morrow’s appointees to the newly minted Regional Ferry Task Force. The mission of the Task Force is to analyze and develop a jurisdictional implementation plan for the recommendations delivered to community and elected officials on July 30, 2024, at Pere Marquette Lodge by the Nelson Nygaard Consultants Group. The study of Illinois regional ferries, including the Grafton Ferry, was made possible by an IDOT grant that was awarded to America’s Central Port District in 2023. The original purpose was to explore the feasibility/possibility of expanding the current ferry service between Grafton, Illinois and St. Charles, Missouri. GRANITE CITY – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that as part of ongoing efforts to replace the Interstate 270 bridges between Illinois 3 and Riverview Drive in Missouri, lane closures in both directions of I-270 are scheduled to take place beginning, weather permitting, at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23. One lane will remain open in each direction. By 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, all lanes will reopen. Eastbound traffic will use a new lane configuration. Motorists should be alert for altered lane patterns. Westbound lanes will remain the same. GODFREY - As the Great Godfrey Maze prepares to open, the Godfrey Parks and Recreation department is looking for part-time workers to make the maze a success. The Great Godfrey Maze will run from Sept. 13 through Oct. 26, 2024. In addition to the Peanuts-themed maze and Haunted Maze, families can enjoy hay wagon rides, a bounce pillow, the corn crib and the cow train, among other activities. ALTON – Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford has issued a heartfelt response about the death of K-9 Odin and one of his officers being shot in a armed confrontation on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. These were Ford's words: "In a tragic incident early this morning, K-9 Odin of the Alton Police Department lost his life while protecting his fellow officers during an armed confrontation in the 700 block of East 6th Street. ALTON — The Alton Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2700 block of Sanford Avenue just before 10 p.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames coming from the home. Firefighters swiftly brought the fire under control. During a search of the premises, they found a dog inside the house. The firefighters promptly removed the dog and administered oxygen. Following the treatment, the dog began walking around and appeared to be in good condition. The East Alton Fire Department was called to assist at the scene. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

BELLEVILLE - Collinsville, Belleville and O'Fallon have recorded some favorable unemployment stats from July 2024 to July 2023 in the recent Illinois Department of Unemployment Security report. Collinsville's rate stands at 5.5 percent, up from 4.9 percent in 2023 for July. O'Fallon posted a 5.6 percent mark compared to 4.7 percent a year ago, and Belleville remained steady at 5.8 percent this July to 5.3 percent in 2023 at the same time. Granite City has a 6.7 percent unemployment rate in comparison to July 2023 of 4.9 percent. East St. Louis city now has a 9.2 percent unemployment rate in July 2024 compared to 8.3 percent in July 2023. GRAFTON - On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow presented certificates of appreciation on behalf of the City Council to the team of boating residents who installed the new public boat dock at Lighthouse Park. “The dock was in serious need of replacement, and last year, the city set aside the funds to purchase a new dock. Joe De Sherlia, owner and operator of the Grafton Marina helped locate the proper type for our needs and we purchased the new dock from Tiger Docks of Wright City Missouri,” said Mayor Morrow. Edwardsville's unemployment rate is unemployment 4.6 percent in July 2024 in comparison to July 2023.
