WOOD RIVER - The Wood River City Council has proclaimed Aug. 10, 2024 “Jayden Ulrich Day” in honor of Jayden Ulrich , the East Alton athlete who, while falling just short of qualifying for the finals of the Olympic women's discus throw, has still made her community proud by making the Olympic team. At Monday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Tom Stalcup announced that on this year’s Jayden Ulrich day, there will be a Homecoming celebration for her held at the city’s Rec Center. “On Saturday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Rec Center, a Homecoming for Jayden Ulrich will take place,” Stalcup said. “There will be a parade that will start around 10:30 and end up at the Rec Center.” He added the parade will be led by emergency vehicles from East Alton, which will escort Ulrich to the Rec Center. “We’ll give her a big hand of applause in just making the Olympics,” the mayor added. “She’s not happy with

CHICAGO — Today Governor JB Pritzker signed into law HB3144, the local government tax omnibus bill that eliminates the state tax on grocery items. The 1% state tax is repealed across all of Illinois, although local governments have the option of imposing the tax on a local basis by ordinance. “Even with inflation cooling off every dollar counts, so I’m proud we’re doing what we can to make trips to the grocery store a little easier,” said Governor Pritzker. “It’s one more important part of lifting the burden on Illinois families. PONTOON BEACH — The Pontoon Beach community was struck by tragedy on August 3, 2024, as two separate fatal accidents on Highway 111 resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The first accident occurred at approximately 8:49 p.m. Barry McGrew, 69, of Granite City, Illinois, was pushing a bicycle westbound across the southbound lanes of Highway 111, just north of Engineer Road, when he was struck by a GMC van traveling southbound. McGrew was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Just over two hours later, at approximately 10:50 p.m., a second fatal accident took place. A Harley Davidson motorcycle, occupied by Cole Whitford, 29, and Morgan Whitford, 29, also of Granite City, Illinois, was traveling south on Highway 111. EDWARDSVILLE - The manager of Kyoto Steakhouse Edwardsville Inc. was indicted by a Madison County grand jury on several charges including sales tax evasion, theft of government funds, and more. He allegedly used false sales figures for more than three years to avoid paying over $100,000 in taxes to the state. Lin Hua, 41, of Edwardsville, was charged with one count of Theft of Government Funds (a Class X felony), one count of Sales Tax Evasion (a Class 1 felony), and three counts of Filing a Fraudulent Sales & Use Tax Return (each Class 3 felonies). The indictment, filed on Aug. 1, 2024, concerns a series of crimes Hua reportedly committed from Oct. 20, 2018 to March 21, 2022. During that time, he “utilized false sales figures to prepare and file monthly sales and use tax returns on behalf of Kyoto,” exceeding $100,000 in taxes owed, according to the indictment. The three Class 3 felonies filed against Hua stem from fraudulent sales and use tax returns filed on Jan.

COLUMBIA – A bear sighting in rural Columbia, Illinois, has captured the attention of Metro East residents and authorities alike. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department shared footage of the sighting Columbia on its Facebook page on Sunday, advising the community on how to handle potential encounters with the animal. The bear was apparently headed in a northerly direction out of Columbia, authorities said. According to the Sheriff’s Department, individuals who encounter a bear should remain calm and back away slowly. If the bear approaches, people are advised to make themselves appear as large as possible. Under no circumstances should residents approach or feed the bears, and any sightings should be reported to authorities immediately. The Columbia Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office have both emphasized the importance of these guidelines. ALTON - The Alton Youth Symphony recently hosted their summer camp for young musicians. Third- through eighth-grade students could participate in the summer camp, which ran from July 22–26, 2024. Jamie Pullen, president of AYS, explained that the camp encouraged kids to learn more about music and performance. “It was a great week,” Jamie said. “Really, I was very encouraged by what happened. I think all musical groups took a hit with COVID, so we’ve been in a rebuilding phase. As an organization, Centerstone provides mental health and substance use treatment to communities across Illinois. SWANSEA — A routine traffic stop on July 25, 2024, led to the discovery of a cache of drugs and a firearm, resulting in multiple charges for three individuals. An officer with the Swansea Police Department pulled over a vehicle in the 2700 block of North Illinois Street and conducted a search based on probable cause. During the search, officers found a Cobra .380 caliber handgun, a large bag of ecstasy tablets, 12 bags of methamphetamine, several other pills, and several hundred dollars in cash. ALTON - Two individuals have been charged with forgery after attempting to pass bad checks on two different occasions at Schwegel's Market in Alton, leading to felonies filed in two separate cases. Duane A. Reams, 37, of Bethalto, and Marquitta M. Davis, 43, of Edwardsville, were both charged on July 29, 2024 with one count each of forgery, both Class 3 felonies. According to Madison County court documents, Reams allegedly passed a bad check in the amount of $2,204.63 to Schwegel’s Market in Alton on Feb 11, 2024. Three months earlier on Nov. 9, 2023, Davis reportedly passed a bad check in the amount of $1,514.54 at the same location. Reams and Davis were both granted pretrial release, and both of their cases were presented by the Alton Police Department. The issuance of charges is based solely upon probable cause and is not an indication of guilt. All subjects charged with criminal offenses are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
