CAHOKIA HEIGHTS – Cahokia Heights detectives are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred at 11 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at the Greystone Apartments off Old Missouri Avenue. Cahokia Heights Police have reported a woman was shot and killed in her car outside an apartment complex. The neighborhood has reported previous gunfire activity to police, so it is not unknown in that vicinity. To date, no one has been apprehended and suspects or a victim have not been identified.

GRANITE CITY - Andrew Walker, a freshman guard on the boys basketball team at Granite City High School, has made many positive contributions to the Warriors in his first season with the team, and did have a good game against Collinsville on Dec. 12 at GCHS Memorial Gym, scoring eight points in a 67-60 loss to Collinsville. He has also been strong in several other Warriors' contests. Only a freshman, the potential for Andrew Walker at this point is limitless in his career with the Warriors. It was a game where Granite came back from being down by as many as 16 points to come within five late in the game, but the Kahoks were able to hold off the rally and preserve the win. Walker is a Stillwater Senior Living Male Athlete of the Month. Walker has averaged around 6.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, also having nine assists, eight steals and a blocked shot. EDWARDSVILLE - Sophie Shapiro has been a starting guard for the girls' basketball team at Edwardsville High, and so far this season, she's made a positive contribution to a young team that's been gaining its footing day by day and is ready to break out in the second half of the season. Shapiro scored six points in the Tigers' 63-41 home win over East St. Louis on Jan. 2, to start the 2024 portion of the schedule, taking Edwardsville to 6-9 on the season and a three-game winning streak, going back to the Tigers' final two games of the Visitation Christmas Tournament over the Holidays. For the season, she's been averaging six points and 4.7 rebounds-per-game, adding 24 assists, 17 steals and a blocked shot to the mix. ALTON - In December 2023, Alton High School had a bunch to celebrate recently after the Southwest Conference's 11th Annual Regional High School Art Competition. Alton High has always had a strong arts department, and this year's entries stood out among other schools. LOUIS COUNTY - St. Louis County Police Department Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating a homicide in the 2400 block of Chambers Road in the City of Moline Acres and the deceased has been identified as Daijion Miller, 28 years of age, of the 1200 block of Kilgore Drive in St. Louis, Missouri 63137. City of Moline Acres police officers responded to a call for service for a shooting in the 2400 block of Chambers Road. Responding officers located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot injuries. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene. Preliminary investigation has revealed the shooting occurred at another unidentified location. The male drove himself to this location. GRANITE CITY – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that repairs on eastbound Interstate 270 between Illinois 3 and Riverview Drive in Missouri will require lane closures starting, weather permitting, at 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5. One lane will always remain open. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes during this closure. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, be alert for changing conditions, obey all construction signage, and refrain from using mobile devices while approaching and traveling through the work zone. ALTON - On Saturday, Feb. 17, 2023, the Hayner Public Library District will display a real letter written by Abraham Lincoln to an Alton resident. Director Mary Cordes explained that the library has owned this letter for many decades, but it’s usually stored in their safe deposit box. BRANSON, Mo. - When the lights went out at one of the Midwest's premier amusement parks for the season, a beloved ride closed with it. Silver Dollar City announced earlier in February 2023 that this season would be Fire In The Hole's last. So, on Dec. 30, 2023, the parks final day of operations, people flocked to Branson from all over the country to get their last rides. Fire In The Hole was a favorite to many guests because of its family-oriented nature. It wasn't meant to be a thrill ride. It was meant to be something the entire family could get on and enjoy. ST. LOUIS - Today, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones and Commissioner Robert J. Tracy releases highlights of 2023 year-end crime data, which reveal significant improvements to public safety in St. Louis. ALTON - As we start 2024, the Hayner Public Library District is sharing information about their programs for kids and teens, all free of charge and meant to encourage literacy and library use. The library offers many services, programs and events to patrons, but staff and board members make a special point to reach young people. Keller, a 6-foot-2 sophomore forward for the Griffins, has emerged as one of the team's top scorers. Keller has been outstanding with a 14.5-points-per-game average in 14 games this season.
