ALTON - The Alton City Council quickly and unanimously passed the latest version of the decorative holiday lighting schedule for the Clark Bridge on Wednesday. While excluding non-federal holidays like Valentine’s Day and Halloween, the new schedule still calls for school colors on homecoming and graduation for Marquette Catholic and Alton High Schools. July 3 was also included in the final list, seemingly to accommodate Alton’s “ Fireworks on the Mississippi ” event held each year on July 3. The resolution, given preliminary approval by the Committee of the Whole on Monday , features a list of holidays initially expanded - then slightly trimmed down - following a series of discussions and amendments over multiple meetings. The finalized holiday lighting schedule was approved as follows: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday (Jan. 15): Red/white/blue President’s Day (third Monday of February): Red/white/blue Memorial Day Weekend

ALTON - A few Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine students spent the evening chalking the sidewalks in front of Alton elementary schools. On Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024, the School of Dental Medicine (SDM) Pediatric Dentistry Club went to seven of the Alton Community Unit School District #11 elementary schools to chalk the sidewalks before the first day of school on Thursday, Aug. 15. Kayla Ringo, president of the club, explained that this is the second year they have chalked the sidewalks, and they enjoy bonding with each other while providing a fun welcome for the elementary students. “All the kiddos really loved it,” Ringo said. “It was a good way to just welcome them into school for their first day.” Not only is it a positive bonding experience for the SDM students, but Ringo pointed out that it allows the kids to have fun when they come to school. WOOD RIVER - Residents and businesses across several towns in Illinois, including Roxana, Wood River, Hartford, East Alton, Alton, and Godfrey, have reported an odor throughout the area. The smell, which many have compared to gas, has resulted in numerous reports to Ameren Gas. As a precautionary measure, the Wood River Walmart was evacuated. However, after a thorough inspection, it was determined that there was no gas leak at the store, and shoppers and employees were allowed to return shortly thereafter. Ameren is aware of the widespread reports and is actively investigating the source of the odor. Wood River Fire Chief Wade Stahlhut said Wednesday afternoon that his firefighters are still searching to find answers about the odor. He said the odor came from the west side of Wood River initially. "It had just a heavy pungent natural gas odor," he said. GRANITE CITY - A man from Granite City faces multiple criminal charges after injuring a 9-year-old child while evading arrest from a previous criminal case. James H. Ellis, 28, of Granite City, was charged with aggravated battery (a Class 3 felony) and resisting a peace officer (a Class A misdemeanor). On Aug. 5, 2024, Ellis allegedly caused bodily harm to a 9-year-old victim after he “pushed the victim to the ground, causing him to strike his head on the pavement and lacerating his head,” according to Madison County court documents. Ellis reportedly committed the battery while fleeing on foot from a Granite City Police officer attempting to arrest him; he was wanted on previous criminal charges including reckless discharge of a firearm and more, according to a petition to deny his pretrial release. “He fled from police on foot, approaching two children and pushing one to the ground, causing him to strike his head on the pavement, causing injury,”

ALTON — What began as a small initiative seven years ago has grown into a significant community event, thanks to the efforts of Jiuana and Efrem Evans. On Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, the couple organized a backpack giveaway at the Alton Middle School Annex Gym, providing over 300 backpacks to local students, a marked increase from the 100 backpacks distributed last year. "Seeing the community come together is incredibly fulfilling," said Efrem Evans. "I'm very proud, more proud that the community is coming together and everybody is having a good time." The Evans family are Difference Makers in the Riverbend area with their charitable hearts. SPRINGFIELD - Today, Governor JB Pritzker signed Executive Order 2024-02 to begin a cross-sector planning process to outline a clear framework for addressing the needs of older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers over the next decade. The Executive Order creates a new strategic position, the Chief Planning Officer, within the Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA). This position will lead the development and implementation of a multi-year Multi-Sector Plan for Aging (MPA). The MPA will serve as a 10-year blueprint to support healthy aging in Illinois communities and set clear, measurable objectives for evaluating public and private sector progress toward this goal. GLEN CARBON - Tennis courts are getting closer to returning to Glen Carbon as part of the Schon Park Phase 3 improvement project, which is making progress following Village Board approval of two related resolutions on Tuesday. After swapping the Miner Park tennis courts for pickleball courts last month , the Village Board voted to pursue funding a project which will bring tennis courts and much more to Schon Park. Public Works Director Scott Slemer outlined the full scope of the project’s third phase at Tuesday’s Village Board meeting. “Schon Park Phase 3 is expected to include a sports complex including tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts, in addition to connecting paths to the existing parks system per the Parks and Trails Master Plan,” Slemer said. GRANITE CITY – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that road repairs will require lane closures in both directions of Interstate 270 between Illinois 3 and Riverview Drive in Missouri starting, weather permitting, at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16.
