ALTON – RiverWorks Discovery is hosting a Who Works the Rivers event in partnership with the maritime industry at the National Great Rivers Museum. Wednesday, October 18 , approximately 165 students from six area high schools will attend. The event will be from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Students will engage with industry representatives by participating in interactive stations at the National Great Rivers Museum. The stations are designed to show a snapshot of what a career on the river entails. Stations include everything from line throwing and handling, learning about commodities shipped on the river, firefighting, handling safety equipment and more. EAST ST. LOUIS – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced lane restrictions will be encountered, weather permitting, on westbound Interstates 55/70 between Illinois Route 203 and the MLK Bridge ramp, in St. Clair County, beginning 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, through 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. The westbound outside right lane will be closed continuously during this time. Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., an additional westbound lane will also be closed. All entrance and exit ramps will remain open. These restrictions are needed to complete pavement repair work. IDOT District 8 Operations will make the needed improvements. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, the use of alternate routes should be considered. ALTON – YWCA is pleased announce that registration is open to students in grades 1, 2, 3, or 4 in our free Riverbend Reading Club. Riverbend Reading Club is designed bring struggling readers and writers to grade level in a small, relaxed environment. YWCA utilizes the renowned Fontas & Pinnel Leveled Literacy Curriculum which supplements local school district’s curriculum. Students are grouped with other students at similar reading levels into small groups. Sessions run Monday through Thursday, 3 pm – 5pm and each session lasts approximately 45 minutes. The CVS store at 2422 College Ave. located in the heart of Alton has announced it will close by the end of November 2023. The CVS Store at 2811 Homer M. Adams Parkway in the Alton Schnucks was contacted and said it will remain open even after the store at 2422 College Ave. closes to customers. The College Avenue store in Alton has been located across the street from a Walgreens store. EDWARDSVILLE - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus community joins the City of Edwardsville in mourning the loss of Ward 2 Alderman John “Jack” Burns. Alderman Burns is an SIUE alumnus (1971) who graduated with a business degree in finance and marketing. He died on Friday, October 6, 2023. SIUE provided this statement: "Alderman Burns life of service reflects our SIUE commitment to duty and improving the lives of others. A longtime Edwardsville resident, Alderman Burns was first elected to the City Council in 2017 and reelected in 2021. We especially thank him for his service in the United States Army." ALTON - Civic Memorial Head Girls Tennis Coach Margaret Welbourne and her squad members are beaming with pride today after an Eagles double team qualified for the state tennis tournament. The combination of Emma Davis, a junior, and Abigail Harms, a sophomore, placed second in the Marquette Catholic Sectional on Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, at Gordon Moore Park Tennis Courts. Davis-Harms are Tom Lane State Farm Insurance Female Athletes of the Month. "CM had not had any girls qualify for state in tennis for several years," Coach Welbourne said. "They were champions of their flight at our Conference Tournament (MVC), which I'm pretty positive hasn't happened in a very long time, if ever." The coach said the girls have put in so much work during the year and their record shows it. Currently, before state, the Davis-Harms combination is 26-3 overall. Strobel, a physical education teacher with Alton Community Unit School District #11, invited parents and guardians to join her P.E. classes as part of Family P.E. Week. This campaign by Active Schools encourages exercise beyond the school gym. Strobel teaches at Eunice Smith Elementary School and Gilson Brown Elementary School, so she works primarily with younger kids to try to foster an early love for fitness. “I think sometimes people in general and parents sometimes have a misconception of what P.E. is. ALTON - Junior Addison Pranger has continued to improve throughout the girls' tennis season for the Explorers and her head coach Kathy Claywell said she thought performed well in the sectional singles competition on Saturday. “Addison has really improved her game and has become a very good tennis player,” explained the coach. “She works hard at it.
