EDWARDSVILLE — A Ferguson, Mo., man was charged Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, in the death of a Maryland Heights, Mo., man after a body was discovered in Alton in a wooded area on Lincoln Avenue. Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine and Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford announced Friday that a 44-year-old Ferguson, Missouri, man - Antonio M. Baker - has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a man whose body was discovered in a wooded area of Alton. The 34-year-old victim found in the wooded area was Andre T. Hawkins of Maryland Heights, Mo. Alton Police took Baker into custody Thursday night in Missouri, less than 48 hours after the discovery of the victim’s body. A municipal worker discovered the body of Hawkins shortly after noon Wednesday in a wooded area along Lincoln Avenue. Hawkins suffered numerous gunshots. PIASA - Sophomore Vivian Zuehide is a remarkable athlete and she is showing it this winter on the basketball court for the Piasa Birds. Vivian's coach Darren Mosley said she has had a double-double with scoring and rebounding in multiple games this season and is extremely productive on the court. ROXANA - Junior Sarah Baldwin was a member of the Roxana girls' volleyball team this past fall and counted on heavily as a setter. Baldwin can also play the middle hitter role. The good news for Roxana’s girls program is Baldwin will return in the fall 2024. Sarah is being recognized for her abilities this past season with the Shells as a Midwest Members Credit Union Female Athlete of the Month for Roxana. Sarah’s head girls volleyball coach Andrea Keller spoke very highly of her setter. “She did an amazing job this past year of taking a role as a setter, especially since she has never done it before,” Coach Keller said. “She is a dynamite hitter and is always working on improving her game and working to become a better setter and all-around player.” Coach Keller said Sarah will only improve as she takes the experience of her junior year into her senior year in the fall of 2024. GRANITE CITY - Sophomore Lucy Klumpp is a versatile Granite City High School athlete. This past fall in 2023, Klumpp was a key on varsity for the Warriors’ volleyball team as an outside hitter. She is also a strong soccer player for Granite City and has participated in track and field. Lucy Klumpp is a Stillwater Senior Living Female Athlete of the Month for the Warriors. EAST ST. LOUIS – U.S. Attorney Rachel Aud Crowe announced on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, that a district judge sentenced a felon from East St. Louis to 97 months’ imprisonment after he admitted to conspiring to launder money and distribute drugs in Southern Illinois. Donald B. Perkins, 37, of East St. Louis, pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy, one count of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and one count of felon in possession of a firearm. “This prison sentence reflects the seriousness of breaking the law by distributing illegal drugs, laundering the proceeds and unlawfully having a firearm,” said Crowe. According to court documents, Perkins conspired with a co-defendant to launder money to conceal drug proceeds by using cash exchanges and cashier’s checks. SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office returned nearly $276 million in missing money during 2023, Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced today. Illinois’ missing money program — also known as I-CASH — processed 314,154 claims last year. In December, the Treasurer’s Office returned $12 million through 11,477 claims. “This money does more good for our state and our citizens in their hands than in a vault in Springfield,” Frerichs said. “We have made it easier to file a claim for many cases and streamlined the system with the help of state lawmakers.” I-CASH is one of the state’s oldest consumer protection initiatives. ALTON - Alton Police say a missing juvenile from Catholic Children’s Home has been located. Alton Chief Jarrett Ford confirmed a boy reported as a runaway named Emmett as of Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, is alive and well and now is safe. “We know his whereabouts,” the chief said. Emmett’s mother had posted on social media about her missing son asking for help for her and the police in locating him. He went missing about two weeks ago from the Catholic Children’s Home, she said. Megan Lee, his mother, said Emmett likes to frequent arcades and flea markets if not in the Children’s Home. He has been there for about a year, she said. Lee said that Emmett had gone missing some before, but this time she worried about his safety with the length of time his whereabouts were not known. “I am very thankful he has been located,” she said when told Friday morning that her son had been located by police. “Thank God.”

EDWARDSVILLE – A section of Hillsboro Avenue east of downtown Edwardsville will be closed for several months for storm and sanitary sewer replacement, resurfacing and other improvements. The closure is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 8, but the work is dependent on weather conditions. The Hillsboro Avenue closure will run from North Buchanan Street to Illinois Route 157. The project will require a full closure from the vicinity of Hickory Street/Columbia Avenue to Bunn Avenue. The Hickory Street intersection will be accessible during the work. The rest of the impacted area – from North Buchanan to Hickory Street and from Bunn Avenue to Route 157 -- will be closed to through traffic only. Letter To The Editor: For Alton to solve its problems, we must involve the entire community, establish incentives for Broadway development, hire more police officers and make them more visible to counter crime. Alton needs a major push to rebuild neighborhoods and develop programs for our youth and seniors. We need commitments to bring jobs to Alton. Election day is fast approaching and as citizens our decision matters! It's time we vote into office a person who is willing to work hard at change for the city that will benefit the entire community.
