HARDIN - The Calhoun Sheriff's Office announced charges against a Medora woman and Jerseyville woman today, Dec. 18, 2023. The pair - Karen A. Bray, 61, of Medora, and Teresa Blanco, 60, of Jerseyville face various drug-related charges below. The Calhoun Sheriff's Office said on Dec. 11, 2023, a Deputy Sheriff with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop at Illinois River Road near Meppen, in Calhoun County, Illinois. CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced he is joining the NCAA in requesting a federal judge extend his temporary restraining order granted earlier this week prohibiting the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from enforcing its transfer eligibility rule until at least the end of the academic year. Extending the restraining order would allow collegiate athletes to play sports without concern as to their status with the NCAA. “Collegiate athletes deserve to know that they can play while our lawsuit challenging the transfer eligibility rule continues,” Raoul said. “I filed this lawsuit to bring fairness to collegiate sports and ensure the needs of athletes and their families are prioritized and respected.” The joint motion requesting an extension of the restraining order was filed today in the Northern District of West Virginia. SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced several new laws initiated by his office that will take effect at the start of the new year. The initiatives were passed earlier this year by the Illinois General Assembly and signed into law. They include: Combating Distracted Driving Giannoulias drafted this legislation to increase road safety by making it illegal to Zoom, watch or stream videos, or access social media sites while driving. In 2022, more than 24,000 drivers were issued citations for distracted driving in Illinois. CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul, along with 19 attorneys general, filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit to uphold a lower court ruling against an Arkansas law banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth. In their brief , Raoul and the coalition support the blocking of Arkansas’ Act 626 in Brandt et. al v. Griffin because it violates equal protection by prohibiting transgender youth from accessing medical treatment such as hormone therapy and puberty blockers to treat gender dysphoria. “Access to gender affirming care is significant to transgender youth’s physical and mental health. GRAFTON - Grafton’s Winter Lights Parade was bigger and brighter than ever on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023. The parade kicked off at 5:30 p.m. at Hawg Pit BBQ in downtown Grafton. The route traveled along the back road and ended at the Loading Dock at 401 Front Street. Alison Rohan explained that this new town tradition began as an inside joke and has quickly grown to include over 100 parade entries. “ It started as a little joke,” she said. “Two of us decorated our car with lights during the holidays, and we would have a parade. So we did it the first year and had fun doing it and the next year we had 25 people in the parade, or cars. So this year on social media it really blew up, and we had over 100 entries in the parade.” This year’s parade was sponsored by the Grafton Chamber of Commerce. They encouraged people to grab dinner at the Loading Dock or somewhere else in Grafton and explore more of downtown Grafton after the parade concluded.

GILLESPIE - On Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, Gillespie will host their second annual Holiday Sparkle event, complete with over 70 vendors, a train through town and a lighted parade. MADISON COUNTY - Illinois State Police Troop issued information late Friday afternoon, Dec. 15, 2023, about a crash at 11:28 a.m. earlier in the day on Interstate 255 southbound, just south of the Roxana exit (milepost 5) in Madison County. ISP had this preliminary synopsis of the crash: "ISP Troop 8 responded to the above location for the report of a single-unit, rollover crash. The driver of a truck-tractor semi-trailer (TTST) swerved to avoid a vehicle that cut them off and lost control, causing the TTST to roll over into the fence line.
