EDWARDSVILLE – Metro-East Lutheran High School’s scholar bowl team defeated teams from high schools across Southern Illinois to win the championship of a televised game show tournament produced by PBS. MELHS won the 2023 Scholastic Hi-Q tournament in a match the team played in the fall but which was only recently released by PBS station WSIU Television. MELHS defeated Calloway County High School by a score of 655 to 455 to win the tournament. Calloway was the previous Hi-Q champion, having won the tournament in 2022. Thirty-two teams from high schools across southern Illinois competed in Scholastic Hi-Q, an academics-based game show that has been produced by WSIU Television in Carbondale since 1985. One in 1,000 Americans are affected by secondary lymphedema. It’s a chronic disease when there’s an increased collection of lymphatic fluid in the body that causes swelling. Those with cancer are known to develop lymphedema, which can lead to skin and tissue changes, according to the National Institutes of Health. Sometimes those with lymphedema can inherit the disease, known as primary lymphedema, which is much rarer. You can be born with lymphedema, develop it during puberty, or later. There’s no cure for lymphedema. It’s a disease, and one like diabetes that you have to manage through treatment. Treva Haney, a supervisor in Rehabilitation Services at OSF HealthCare, says her team works through different treatment plans with patients to meet their specific needs. “Usually the plan of attack for treating lymphedema is complete congestive therapy,” Treva says. “This involves compression bandaging and a special, lymphatic massage.”

GODFREY - The Annual Village of Godfrey Parks and Recreation Department has a series of captivating events throughout the spring, summer, and fall for children and families and this past week. The Big Truck Day event had what Park and Recreation Director Chris Logan called "a lot of participation." "I think it went very well," Logan said. "It was a great day and there were a lot of good groups who also participated. It was a beautiful day and a great event. I think everyone had a great time." ALTON - Myles Paniagua has made quite a name for himself in athletics at Marquette Catholic High School. He is a tremendous two-sport athlete, spending time between baseball and soccer. Myles Paniagua has played a vital role for the Explorers when he’s been available. Paniagua missed some time during this baseball season due to an ankle injury that caused him to miss a few weeks. Some of his statistics jump off the page, he’s one of two Marquette baseball players to have an OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) over 1.000, a number only the best pure hitters obtain. Paniagua led the line for Explorer soccer in his time on the pitch at Gordon Moore Park, his more than impressive 35 goals for the Explorers led the team and then some this past boys' soccer season. JERSEYVILLE - Tri-County Rural Transit and the Veterans Assistance Commission of Jersey County are teaming up for a pilot program to help transport Jersey County veterans to the St. Louis VA Medical Center at John Cochran. Starting Wednesday, May 10, transportation for veterans will be available one day per week on Wednesdays and leave from the Susnig Center, located at 405 Mound St. in Jerseyville. Departures will be at 8 a.m. for an approximate 9:30 a.m. arrival and curbside drop-off at John Cochran. The vehicle will return to John Cochran to pick veterans back up and promptly leave at 2 p.m. Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Gregory Breden thanked Tri-County Rural Transit for providing their vehicles and drivers, as he said a program like this is “needed badly” for local veterans. LOUIS COUNTY - The deceased in a recent St. Louis County homicide has been identified as Dominic Meriwether, Jr., 23 years of age, of the 8800 block of Shannon Fox Circle in St. Louis, Missouri 63136. St. Louis County Police Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating a homicide that occurred in the 7000 block of West Florissant Avenue which resulted in the death of an adult male. On May 5, 2023, at 11:52 AM, police officers from the City of Country Club Hills responded to a call for service for a shooting in the 7000 block of West Florissant Avenue. Arriving officers observed an adult male in a parking lot suffering from apparent gunshot injuries. The male was transported to an area hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Preliminary investigation has led investigators to believe the shooting occurred on the parking lot of the business. ALTON - Rev. George Humbert Jr. left a lasting legacy in this area for his work in the ministry and as a community citizen. George died at age 75 years old on May 4, 2023. Ethan Humbert, George's son, had an incredible relationship with his father. He described his dad as "an amazing man and my hero." "My dad was my best friend," Ethan said. "He touched so many people's hearts and anyone that he ever had the pleasure of meeting. He would make anyone who met him feel better in just a few minutes with his positive attitude. "I am really struggling to lose him, but I have to stay strong for my mom and kiddos. Knowing he was always proud of me is helping me to get through this hard time." George was a Ball State University graduate and also served with the Peace Corps in Malawi, Africa, and attended Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Kentucky. He was the pastor of College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton for 31 years. He married the love of his life Lynna Miller and she survives.

Elliott-Barnes had had very consistent times in both the 100 and 200 meters, as well as being a part of the Redbird relay teams and on Saturday, had a great feeling about his performances on the day.
