Two SIUE Students Awarded National Health Information Scholarships

EDWARDSVILLE – Two Southern Illinois University Edwardsville students, Tyler Evans and Chase Horton, have received the National Health Information Scholarship from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Foundation. Evans and Horton are two of 15 students in the country to receive the scholarship. Evans and Horton are pursuing a master’s in healthcare informatics at SIUE. "I came into Marquette going to a public school and I didn't know anybody coming into a private school," she said. "It didn't take me long to have friends, and when I came in here I met some of my best friends." It helped that she decided to go out for three sports during her freshman year. That's a sure way to make some new friends. Attorney General Kwame Raoul Leads Coalition Supporting New York Concealed Carry Law

CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul led a coalition of 15 attorneys general supporting New York’s concealed carry regulations by asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit to reverse a lower court decision that preliminarily enjoined certain aspects of New York’s Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA). LOUIS COUNTY - In December of 2022, the St. Louis County Police Department Crime Laboratory became the 75th organization in the U.S., and the 101st in the world, to use STRmixTM forensic software in its scientific testing of crime scene evidence. STRmixTM is an advanced DNA interpretation software capable of resolving mixed DNA profiles previously regarded as too complex or low quantity to interpret manually. The software will considerably increase the number of DNA profiles that can be utilized to aid criminal investigations. In 2018, the department was awarded competitive grant funding to purchase STRmixTM through the 2017 Forensic DNA Laboratory Efficiency Improvement and Capacity Enhancement Program Grant. Validation began in early 2019 and was completed in 2021. Implementation and analyst training was completed in December of 2022. LOUIS COUNTY - St. Louis County Police Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating a pedestrian struck at the intersection of Lucas-Hunt Road and Jacobi Avenue that resulted in the death of a male. On January 17, 2023, at 11:11 p.m. St. Louis County Police officers from the North County precinct responded to a call for service at the intersection Lucas-Hunt Road and Jacobi Avenue for a person struck. Responding officers located a male who had been struck by a motor vehicle. The male was transported to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased. Preliminary investigation has revealed a vehicle was traveling westbound on Lucas-Hunt Road at Jacobi Avenue when a male who had exited a Metro Bus attempted to cross Lucas-Hunt Road, entered the roadway and was struck by a vehicle. Graham Correctional Center Has Reported Substances Scare, Nobody Harmed

HILLSBORO - The Graham Correction Center in Hillsboro reported several inmates and personnel were taken to area hospitals for treatment after a report of exposure to an initially unknown substance. Prison officials did not disclose how many inmates received treatment in the health care unit of the prison and 18 staff members at John A. Graham Correctional Center were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Illinois State Police also disclosed that preliminary tests for suspicious substances came back negative for narcotics, but returned results for nasal spray with acetaminophen, paracetamol, and baby powder. "The substances identified were nonhazardous and should not have necessitated the use of Narcan or required hospitalization," state Department of Corrections spokesperson Naomi Pzzello said. BETHALTO - The Bethalto Police on Thursday announced a woman has been charged in Madison County Circuit Court with one felony count of offenses related to a motor vehicle. Rosemarie A. Baker, 26, of Cottage Hills, faces the above charge. Bethalto Police said today that at 12:06 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, a Bethalto officer observed and stopped a vehicle that was reported stolen out of Washington County, Illinois, in the driveway of 16 Ray Street, Cottage Hills, Illinois. Undocumented Man Gets 46 Months in Prison for Trafficking Fentanyl

LOUIS – A man originally from Mexico was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison in a U.S. District Court on Wednesday after admitting to possessing hundreds of grams of a controlled substance containing fentanyl with intent to distribute. Luciano Gomezllanos-Martinez, also known as Joaquin Navarez-Urena, pled guilty to possession of more than 400 grams of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and illegal reentry after deportation. In addition to his 46-month sentence, he must pay a $200 fine. According to court documents, Gomezllanos-Martinez was a passenger in a vehicle on Interstate 70 in Madison County when the car was pulled over by the Illinois State Police on Oct. 5, 2021.
