ALTON - Hiram’s Bar on Third Street in Alton is making a valiant attempt to support local artists with an art show on Saturday. He said he will allow artists to display up to three pieces of artwork (paintings and sculptures). The artist chosen will have their best work and a profile about them featured the week after the show on Riverbender.com. Hiram’s owner Hiram Lewis said artists can sell their work for free that day in his 2,000-square-foot gallery and he encourages people to bring their friends and family. “We have a huge art culture around the Alton area and I just wanted to have a free place for them to display and sell their work,” Lewis said. “This is a way of giving back. Some people were talking to me about doing some things for the artists, so I thought this would be a good way to start. WASHINGTON – In a speech on the Senate floor today, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) condemned the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) failure to meet e-cigarette and synthetic nicotine deadlines, unwillingness to take action against companies that defy the agency’s orders, and general lack of urgency when it comes to protecting children from the harms of tobacco and nicotine use. GODFREY - The Resurrection Lutheran Church Men’s Club will host a series of Chili Drive Thru events on Oct. 20, Oct. 27, and Nov. 3, each from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the church, located at 1211 W. Homer M. Adams Parkway in Godfrey. Proceeds from each event will support relief for Illinois and Missouri flood victims. Two microwave-safe bowls of chili with crackers will be available for $6. JERSEY COUNTY - The annual Lucky Duck Derby for the ambulance association and QEM Fish Fry was once again highly successful. The QEM Fish Fry is one of the largest fundraisers each year for that group. The Jersey County Against Drugs Coalition, Safety Pup, Jersey County Sheriff Mike Ringhausen, Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow, and Fire Pup were huge participants in the festivities. Sheriff Ringhausen said supporting causes like this one is truly something he finds close to his heart. "We had the pleasure to attend," he said. "Safety Pup even got to play with Fire Pup at the fish fry," Sheriff Ringhausen. "It's great to see all the first responders come together to support each other. ALTON - This week, Illinois American Water is moving down Third Street near Mac’s and the Riverbender Building at a quick pace with its new sewer system and sanitary sewers and soon will soon be at the end of the street. Rob Lenhardt of Mac’s said he is thankful for what will be ahead once Illinois American Water is finished with the project. Illinois American Water is installing a new sewer system and new sanitary sewers in various areas of Downtown Alton. WOOD RIVER - In October, Pro Automotive Services will join hundreds of Independent Auto Repair Shops across the U.S. and Canada to raise funds for breast cancer vaccine research as part of the Brakes for Breasts fundraiser. As part of the fundraiser, participating auto repair facilities will give away FREE (quality) brake pads or shoes. The customer simply pays for the labor and any other ancillary parts necessary to complete the brake job, and the shops then donate 10 percent of the brake job directly to Dr. Vincent Tuohy & the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Research Fund. EDWARDSVILLE - Three Edwardsville Community Unit School District #7 teachers have been named recipients of a grant from the Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation (IRTAF). The IRTAF recently awarded $36,500 in grant money to public school educators (PreK through 12) statewide. Laura Brennan and Tyler Slaby of Liberty Middle School and Shanyra Cox of Woodland Elementary School were all awarded an IRTAF grant. GODFREY – Lewis and Clark Community College’s Workforce Education, Solutions and Safety Training (WESST) division is an approved provider for new requirements set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is required for individuals seeking to obtain their Class-A or Class-B CDL in order to remain compliant. According to WESST Director Kathy Willis, the requirements are an effort to standardize driving competencies and safety practices, which varied from state-to-state. “L&C’s academic commercial driver’s license (CDL) program already includes the ELDT content and practices for those seeking first-time employment as truckers,” Willis said. “That program has eight and 16-week options for the Class A CDL. The office is Room G-367 on the ground floor of the hospital’s Hatch Wing. HARDIN - On September 8, 2022, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop which resulted in the arrest of two suspects, a seizure of narcotics, paraphernalia, and some unique items related to other criminal offenses. On September 10, 2022, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office followed up with the criminal investigation and executed a court-authorized search warrant at a residence located on Franklin Hill Road in rural Calhoun County. Subsequent to the execution of said search warrant, Brian P. Rose, age 47, of Batchtown, was arrested and charged with the following offenses: Calhoun County Warrant: Soliciting a Sexual Act (Two Counts), Calhoun County Warrant: Patronizing a Prostitute (Two Counts). The auction, which will start at 9 a.m., Sept. 17, at 405 Randall St. Edwardsville, to sell six retired sheriff's office vehicles —two Ford Explorers; three Chevrolet Impalas, Chevrolet Impala, and a Ford Expedition. The vehicles will be sold to the highest bidder. The public can also view vehicles and submit bids online at www.legacysells4u.hibid.com until 8 p.m., Friday. Live bidding resumes on Saturday. COTTAGE HILLS - The Madison County Sheriff's Office announced today that an alleged Cottage Hills Drug House has been shut down. At about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office; Sheriff’s Enforcement Team (SET) executed a search warrant in the 100 Block of Lenora Street, Cottage Hills. The investigation was initiated after receiving several neighborhood complaints and anonymous tips of ongoing drug activity at the residence, which were confirmed through proactive policing by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and Bethalto Police Department Patrol Division. Further investigation by SET, Bethalto Police Department, and Glen Carbon Police Department led to the issuance of a search warrant.
