MARYVILLE/MASCOUTAH - The Home Builders and Remodelers Metro East Association is once again planning to raffle off a house to a lucky winner, all while raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The house, located in Mascoutah and valued at $800,000, is currently under construction. Shannon Stelling with HBRMEA expressed her excitement to raffle off the home and additional prizes, with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Illinois and Make-A-Wish Missouri/Kansas. “We have so many people making donations to make this house happen,” Stelling said. “The goal is to have it built by the end of December and finished, and then the program will launch in January.” Construction started four weeks ago, with HBD Homes serving as the general contractor and The Haire Corporation as the builder. GRANITE CITY – A Granite City man with a history of domestic violence faces felonies in his latest domestic battery case after an argument about social media turned violent. Antonio C. Gambrell Jr., 31, of Granite City, was charged on Aug. 13, 2025, with a Class 2 felony count of domestic battery and his second or subsequent count of domestic battery, a Class 4 felony. Gambrell allegedly intentionally strangled a household or family member on July 30, 2025. He was further accused of grabbing the same victim by the shirt, pushing them against a wall, and slamming their head against the wall. According to the state’s petition to deny Gambrell’s pretrial release from custody, the incident escalated after Gambrell went to the victim’s home after the two had been “arguing about social media all morning.” “Defendant chased victim to her car and she left the residence,” the petition states. “Fearing the defendant would damage her

HBRMEA connects consumers with local builders, developers and remodeling contractors. Shannon Stelling with HBRMEA explained that the industry needs more people to begin their careers in the trades, as the median age of people in the trades industry in Illinois is 56, and many companies are currently backed up with projects. “There’s just not enough people to get the work done these days,” Stelling said. “That’s why we need more people in the trades.” She added that a lot of local schools are building up their trades programs. She believes college is a great option for some students, but trades careers are another viable alternative. EDWARDSVILLE - Edwardsville High School Principal Alex Fox described the first day of school as a smooth and positive experience for students and staff on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025. On opening day, Fox said students returned with enthusiasm, quickly reconnecting with friends and settling into their routines. O’FALLON – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced a closure of the westbound Interstate 64 entrance ramp from Highway 50 in St. Clair County. SPRINGFIELD – Teachers will soon see mental health resources on their school IDs under a new measure supported by State Senator Christopher Belt that was signed into law Friday. “This ensures every adult working with our students has direct access to life-saving crisis resources,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “This will help reinforce a culture of awareness and support.” House Bill 3000 requires all school districts serving students in grades 6-12 to have the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988), the Crisis Text Line and the Safe2Help Illinois helpline on all employee IDs. The law builds on a 2021 law expanding suicide and crisis helpline awareness in schools by ensuring all employees in school districts have this information on their ID cards. HIGHLAND — The Highland Police Department has announced multiple road closures in downtown Highland, Illinois, to accommodate the annual Kirchenfest festival set for Aug. 19-25, 2025. The event, which celebrates the city’s Swiss and German heritage, will prompt street closures and traffic changes aimed at ensuring public safety during the week-long festivities. The Highland Police Department said the following roads will be closed during the festival: 9th Street from Cypress to Lemon; Main Street from Cypress to Lemon; Cypress from 9th to Main; Lemon from 9th to Main; and Olive Street from the alley between Main and Broadway to the alley between 8th and 9th streets.
