EDWARDSVILLE — The Edwardsville High School Tiger Talk Podcast Network visited Springfield recently to meet with Illinois State Representative Katie Stuart and veteran journalist Jak Tichenor, gaining firsthand experience in media production and state government. Sponsored by Dave Lipe and Nicole Pontious, the student podcast network includes two shows: The Jungle, the official EHS sports podcast, and Tiger Spotlight, which highlights the local community. GRANITE CITY – Two incidents of domestic battery within days of each other have led to a Granite City man’s arrest and detention. Brandon M. Payne, 24, of Granite City, was charged with a Class 2 felony count of aggravated battery and a Class 4 felony count of unlawful restraint. He was additionally charged with Class A misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and criminal trespass to a residence. On March 28, 2025, Payne allegedly strangled a household or family member and unlawfully prevented them from leaving a Granite City residence. Three days later on March 31, 2025, he reportedly bit the same victim and trespassed at a different Granite City residence. According to a petition to deny Payne’s pretrial release, officers observed bruising on the victim’s neck consistent with their description of the first incident on March 28. When the victim attempted to leave the residence, “the defendant continued to grab her, stopping her from leaving.”

BENTON – A federal district judge sentenced a Wolf Lake man to 150 months’ imprisonment after he admitted to possessing firearms as a felon. Kyle M. Bond, 41, pleaded guilty to one count of felon in possession of a firearm and one count of receipt or possession of an unregistered firearm. Following imprisonment, Bond will serve three years of supervised release. “In an effort to protect the public and help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals, convicted felons lose their right to legally possess firearms,” said U.S. Attorney Steven D. On Saturday, July 26, 2025, community members are invited to an all-day, kid-friendly festival on the riverfront, complete with music from local bands and major headliners. JERSEY - Jersey Community High School’s freshman and sophomore boys track team competed against 16 teams at the Highland Invite on April 15, 2025, delivering strong performances highlighted by standout athlete Jack Deist. Deist secured second place in the 400-meter race with a time of 53.08 seconds and finished fifth in the long jump, recording a season-best leap of 17 feet, 8.25 inches. He also contributed as a member of the 4x400 relay team. Earlier in the season at the Freeburg Meet, Deist posted a personal record of 52.64 seconds in the 400. Deist is a Sparklight Male Athlete of the Month for Jersey Community High School. SPRINGFIELD — State Senator Christopher Belt secured $550,000 to help Southwestern Illinois College build pathways to good-paying jobs in the construction and building trades in the Metro East. “We often talk about the importance of getting more people into the trades — but talk alone doesn’t build careers,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “This funding will provide resources to train the next generation of skilled works right here in our community.” The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded $19 million in grant funding through the Illinois Works Pre-apprenticeship Program to 38 organizations across the state. EDWARDSVILLE - The Madison County Board voted to repeal an earlier decision denying Armoracia Solar a special use permit to develop a commercial solar energy facility in Collinsville. During the Board’s regular meeting on April 16, 2025, Chairman Chris Slusser explained that the Board voted on Feb. 19, 2025, to deny the special use permit, effectively stopping the development of the facility at the southeast corner of Interstate 55 and Pleasant Ridge Road in Collinsville. But since then, Slusser said Armoracia Solar has “made a lot of concessions.” Slusser, Board member Mick Madison and the State’s Attorney’s Office met with the company to talk through these conditions. Armoracia Solar will plant pine trees to shield the view of the solar farm from the nearby neighborhood. They will also develop a green space area to the west. SPRINGFIELD – Legislation sponsored by State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Murrayville) to prevent school gun violence was unanimously passed by the Illinois House of Representatives last week. Davidsmeyer filed his legislation after hearing of an incident in his district where a student threatened to commit an act of gun violence against another student. The victim told the school staff about the incident, but they did not report it to the principal because it was just a threat. House Bill 1316 requires all school officials to immediately notify the principal’s office in the event of any threat of gun violence on school grounds. The principal shall attempt to notify the offending student’s parents as soon as possible so that the parents may ensure that the student does not have access to a firearm. “I don’t want to take any threats of violence lightly,” Rep. EDWARDSVILLE - During the regular Madison County Board meeting on April 16, 2025, the Board voted 21–5 to oppose House Bill 2827, also known as the Homeschool Act. The Board voted for a nonbinding resolution titled “Defending Parental Rights in Education.” This resolution voices Madison County’s objection to HB2827 and asks the Illinois General Assembly to reject the bill. During the public comment period of the meeting, 13 Madison County residents spoke against HB2827 and urged the Board to vote in favor of the resolution opposing it.
