ALTON — Two individuals have been charged in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on Feb. 26, 2025, near a school bus stop in the 1200 block of Central Avenue, according to the Alton Police Department. Daniel G. Coalan, an adult, faces multiple charges including Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class X and Class 1) and Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons (two counts, Class 4). A 16-year-old juvenile has also been charged under a Delinquency Petition with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1) and Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons (two counts, Class 4). Coalan was arrested on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, in the 700 block of Oakwood Estates in Alton, while the juvenile suspect was apprehended the following day in the 700 block of State Street in Wood River, with assistance from the Wood River and East Alton police departments. Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford expressed gratitude for the work of his team and the collaboration with neighboring law enforcement agencies.

ALTON/GRANITE CITY – Five individuals were charged with mob action in Madison County, including three men from Alton, one from Granite City, and another from St. Louis. In separate but related cases, each of the following individuals face a Class 4 felony count of mob action: Raysean M. Colvin, 20, of Alton John A. Hammond Jr., 44, of Alton Damion D. Weeden Sr., 44, of Alton Lamaure A. Hickman, 20, of Granite City Vernon G. McIntosh, 39, of St. Louis While in custody, all five individuals allegedly acted together to batter another detainee in the Madison County Jail. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office presented each of the cases, and their records indicate all five individuals currently remain in custody. All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Letter To The Editor: At tonight’s Wood River City council meeting, we will once again be considering Councilman Dettmers request to pursue additional professional services regarding items discussed at length in prior meetings. If Councilman Dettmers gets what he wants, this would mean adding thousands of dollars in professional services to the tens of thousands in legal costs Dettmers has already cost Wood River taxpayers. I suspect that hiring a forensic auditor is the path of least resistance for him. Taxpayer-funded lawyers aren’t telling him what he wants to hear. WORDEN - Wordi Gras, a festive celebration dubbed the "Redneck Mardi Gras," took place on Saturday, March 1, 2025, in Worden, a small community along Route 66 in Madison County. ALTON - The Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club’s 39th annual Chili Chowdown will raise money for local students and community projects. On Monday, March 3, 2025, community members can stop by Main Street United Methodist Church in Upper Alton for a dine-in or carry-out chili meal. The Rotary Club will serve chili from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dennis Wilson, who chairs the event, explained that the goal is to improve the Alton-Godfrey community. “We’re very much into the community and trying to make it a better place,” he said. “It’s what Rotary stands for, making a better community and service above self. The idea is we all do a little something for everybody else and make a better world.” Tickets to the Chili Chowdown can be purchased at the door for $10. CHICAGO - Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs marked Casimir Pulaski Day by announcing his office has purchased $15 million in Republic of Poland Bonds. It is the first time the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office has invested in the Republic of Poland. “Chicago and the suburbs are home to one of the biggest Polish populations in the world. CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul, as part of a coalition of 20 attorneys general, today filed an amicus brief in support of a challenge to President Donald Trump’s unlawful attempt to remove a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Raoul and the coalition filed their brief in Wilcox v. Trump, in support of NLRB member Gwynne Wilcox. The coalition argues that if allowed to stand, the attempt would undermine protections for workers and destabilize federal labor law. “The National Labor Relations Board helps to ensure that workers in Illinois and across the country are afforded the rights they are entitled to under federal law,” Raoul said. “Removing the board’s ability to function creates a regulatory vacuum that would undermine workers’ rights and prevent the NLRB from ensuring stable labor relations. I stand with my fellow attorneys general in asking the court to allow this independent body to continue its crucial work.”

ST. LOUIS COUNTY - St. Louis County Police Department Bureau of Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating a homicide near West Florissant Avenue and Dunn Road that resulted in the death of an adult male. At 7:36 p.m., on March 2, 2025, St. Louis County police officers from the North County Precinct responded to a call for service for a shooting victim in the area of Graham Road and two additional victims at an area hospital. Officers determined that all individuals were shot in the area of West Florissant Avenue and Dunn Road. An adult male was pronounced deceased at an area hospital. The other individual who responded to the hospital suffered life threatening injuries but is expected to survive at this time. The third individual located at Graham Road was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No suspects are currently in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
