Letter to the Editor: Wood River Is Headed In The Wrong Direction

2 years 5 months ago
Letter to the Editor: WOOD RIVER: Wood River is headed in the wrong direction. It will take the “Right Two” to turn Wood River around. Voters clearly said they did not want a Rec Center. The cost is now $12,000,000 and we may not have the revenues to cover the cost of up to $1,000,000 a year to pay for it. Voters have been ignored. Cheryl Maguire, the “Rec”-less 3, and their supporters refuse to listen and want to continue to impose their will on Wood River. Voters have endured never-ending fees and tax increases. The City Council has failed to provide the proper oversight, the “checks and balances”, of city management and failed to enforce city ordinances which has resulted in waste and higher costs to taxpayers. Voters have suffered from declining population and stagnant property values. The City Council continues to enact policies that drain our resources and make Wood River unattractive for young families to consider as a place to live. Dav

2 years 5 months ago
CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul, as part of a coalition of attorneys general, urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to adopt stringent standards under the Clean Air Act that protect public health against particulate matter (PM) pollution. These standards, known as the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), are critical to efforts to improve air quality and the health of residents disproportionately impacted by higher PM levels. “Particulate matter pollution has been proven to be harmful to human health,” Raoul said. “It is urgent that the EPA establish sufficient guidelines to address the health threat posed by these contaminants, especially for populations that are disproportionately exposed.” Particulate matter is a pollutant emitted from a variety of sources including vehicles, factories and construction sites. Area Under Strong Threat Today For High Winds, Possible Tornadoes

2 years 5 months ago
ST. LOUIS – The National Weather Service in St. Louis is issuing a strong warning for the region for severe weather and it has been expanded further south across a large portion of the area. The area is under a TORCON level of 7, which is a Tornado Conditions Index by The Weather Channel. A 7 would be a 70 percent chance of tornado activity within 50 miles of any location in an indicated area. TORCON stands for Tornado Condition Index. On a scale of 0 to 10, a specific region is given a number, with higher numbers indicating a higher risk of a tornado within 50 miles of the given location. The TORCON levels were created by retired meteorologist Dr. Greg Forbes. It has been a long period of time since the area has had that predicted level. During the Edwardsville Amazon Warehouse tornado, the region was only under an enhanced risk. The Edwardsville Tornado was an EF-3. These storms could come very fast at a projected 60-70 mph winds and residents will only have a few minutes t

EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County State’s Attorney Thomas A. Haine announced Wednesday that a jury has convicted an Alton man of three counts of attempted murder in connection with the shootings of three people, including a woman whose leg was nearly severed. Special Events Bring Much To Savor In Local Business Establishments

2 years 5 months ago
ALTON – The Irish Day Celebration and Kentucky Derby Day Celebration are all days that draw large crowds to Alton and other area business establishments. The St. Pat’s Celebrations and other significant times of the year around Alton are always captivating and the 2023 edition was certainly the same. Included are selections of the best photos submitted from those big days in Alton and again a St. Pat's video. Three of the most Irish businesses of the group – Johnson’s Corner, Mac’s, and Morrison’s – once again had a lot to celebrate. Several other establishments throughout the area also had big celebrations, including the VFW Post 1308, which had a Poppy Dance for a fundraiser. VFW officials said that evening was dynamite and they will likely make it an annual tradition rather than standing on the street corners seeking donations for poppy sales. The three Irish establishments agree that St. Pat’s is one of the biggest days of the year.

The verdict means Brown will be a ward of the Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections and will be held indefinitely in a special unit inside a state prison. At the trial, two psychologists who evaluated Brown testified that he fits the definition of a Sexually Dangerous Person. Haine commended the work of Assistant

City of Alton Changing Domain In 2023

2 years 5 months ago
ALTON - The City of Alton has announced it is changing its domain in 2023 from cityofaltonil.com and altonpolice.com to cityofaltonil.gov . Here are a few fundamental reasons why: This change will increase the security and searchability of our online presence. The first set of standards for domains, developed in the 1980s, originally designated .com for commercial purposes and .gov for government. To maintain domain integrity, eligibility is limited to qualified government organizations and programs. Having a managed domain name such as .gov assures users that they are accessing an official U.S. government site. Riverbender designed, maintains, and hosts the City of Alton webpage. The old domain name will continue to work for a period of time. “There are several reasons why the switch from .com to .gov is necessary," Director of Information Technology Jarvis T. Swope said. "The biggest reason is that .gov is controlled by federal government domains that are more secure
