ALTON - Alton High junior Lilly Schuler is off to a great start in play for the Redbirds in the 2023 girls' tennis season. Alton High head girls tennis coach Jesse Macias said Lilly is a junior captain and leader on the court for the Redbirds' team. Lilly is an Auto Butler Female Athlete of the Month for the Redbirds. Lilly was fourth at No. 1 singles in the Springfield Invite this past Saturday. "Lilly played number one singles last year, and it was a rough season at times," Macias said. "But, she battled every day and she had a great off-season. She is playing with a lot of confidence and I like everything I have seen about her game so far. ALTON - Alton High School went on what Principal Mike Bellm described as "a soft lockdown" on Wednesday with limited passes within the school. "We just decided to go on soft lockdown following a couple of incidents we had to address," the principal said. A Riverbender.com reporter on the scene after school Wednesday observed the school buses loaded and departing with some Madison County Sheriff's Office deputies present. Administrators and teachers were outside the building observing the students as they loaded the buses. The Madison County Sheriff's Office also had deputies at the scene in the morning after the incidents occurred. Bellm did not want to elaborate any more about the incidents at this time but said the soft lockdown would continue until the end of the day. However, he explained everything was under control quickly this morning after the incidents.

Last season, she qualified for state as an individual to go along with her doubles team Tessa Crawford and Elise Noble. ROXANA - “I think he’s going to be a force this year," Roxana head football coach Wade DeVries said about one of his star running backs, junior Andruw Ellis. He said that after a 27-0 win over the Jerseyville Panthers in Roxana's home-opener last Friday, a game that Ellis scored four rushing touchdowns. Ellis ran in scores of 23, 60, 58, and 68 yards en route to finishing with 305 yards total on the night. That was enough to break a 34-year record set back in 1989 by Jon Hardy. He used 29 carries to get 304 yards. Ellis got to 305 yards with 12 carries and now holds the program record. MADISON COUNTY – The Salvation Army After School Program takes place at 525 Alby Street in Alton, each school day from 3-6 p.m. This supervised program is free of charge for students 5-15 years of age and includes help with homework, tutoring for reading skills and dinner. ST. LOUIS COUNTY - St. Louis County Police Department Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating an accidental shooting in the 14300 block of River Oaks Court that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old female. At 4:35 p.m. on August 25, 2023, St. Louis County police officers from the North County Precinct responded to a call for service for an accidental shooting in the 14300 block of River Oaks Court. Arriving officers located a female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The female was transported to an area hospital for life-saving treatment but succumbed to her injury and was pronounced deceased. This is an active investigation. CAHOKIA - The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated on a death investigation case on August 24, 2023, at the request of the Cahokia Police Department. The activation was to assist in the death investigation of a male pronounced deceased by the St. Clair County Coroner's Office. The male was struck by multiple bullets and set on fire while in the 5800 block of Pocket Road in Cahokia Heights, the Major Case Squad Deputy Commander Lieutenant Bud Jeremias said. "The Major Case Squad was finally able to identify the victim as Miljavon Sawyer, 21, of Cahokia Heights," Jeremias said. ALTON - It was an early morning at the Alton VFW Post 1308 as volunteers came out in support of local veterans to replace the building’s ceiling. Associates from the Alton Home Depot, members of Lewis and Clark Community College’s Building Futures YouthBuild program, and additional volunteers are hard at work today, Aug. 29. They hope to replace all the ceiling tiles by the end of the day, which will revitalize Post 1308. “It’s all hands on deck,” Alton Home Depot store manager Mary Boschert said. Post 1308, located at 4445 North Alby Street, has undergone nearly $12,000 worth of necessary repairs over the past six months. The ceiling tiles totaled $6,000, a donation from Home Depot. At their meeting last night, Aug. 28, board members listened to a presentation by Tara Fox, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. ALTON - Temperatures might have cooled this week, but the Salvation Army branch in Alton will operate as a cooling center if they spike again. The Salvation Army, located at 525 Alby Street, has several programs for community members. Captain Cassy Grey explained that the building remains open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. when temperatures are above 85 degrees, so people can cool off. When temperatures are below 85, people are still welcome to stop by for the Army’s programs or to be connected with services. “People will just come in and out because we have so many programs during the week,” Grey said. “We’re so grateful and blessed by this community…We all need to come together to take care of each other. SPRINGFIELD – While the White House expects a new vaccine for the latest COVID-19 variant to come out sometime next month, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that he doesn't expect more COVID-19 mandates.
